5 Main Causes of Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the most common health conditions people face these days. It is a chronic health issue that needs medical attention and self-care. People suffering from diabetes fail to produce and maintain the glucose level in the body. However, like any other disease, modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors play a major role in diabetes.

5 Main Causes of Diabetes

Factors like genetics, sex, and age are beyond control. A few studies found that diabetes subgroups come with their causative factors. Therefore, this information can be useful in managing diabetes successfully. Here are a few common causes that lead to diabetes.

Diabetes Causes

Diabetes might sound like a common health disorder, but it comes with serious effects as your body fails to use insulin. Due to insufficient insulin, your body fails to transfer glucose from your blood to other parts of your body. Therefore, it results in excess glucose in your blood.

As per the diabetic dietitian in Mumbai, Type 1 and Type 2 are the two most common diabetes seen these days. However, other forms include prediabetes and gestational. Many are still unaware of why they have diabetes in the first place. Genetics and the environment are responsible for diabetes.

Diabetes is caused by various reasons unknown- age, weight, genetics, family medical history, lifestyle choices, etc. Hence, it is hard to tell the exact cause of diabetes or any subgroup.

Causes of Type 1 Diabetes

Here are a few reasons behind type 1 diabetes. However, genes and family history are also responsible for it. Another major cause is the pancreas not making insulin for your body due to the damage to the islet cells in the pancreas.

Environmental factors

The exact cause or the mechanism is still not known. However, some viruses cause type 1 diabetes. Diabetes during adulthood or post-50s happens due to viral infections (Coxsackieviruses). Besides, the chemical toxins in food force your immune system to destroy the insulin-making cells.

Causes of Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is the other name for insulin resistance and affects approximately 95% of people. Moreover, in this case, your body fails to properly respond to insulin. However, there is a difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. In type 1, the pancreas doesn’t produce insulin, and in type 2, the pancreas makes less insulin than normal. As a result, your body becomes resistant to that condition. In fact, people having prediabetes can eventually end up having type 2 diabetes when left untreated. Here are a few common causes of type 2 diabetes.

  • Genetics- Half of your body ailments come from genetic backgrounds. Besides, scientists found various DNA bits responsible for your body’s reaction toward producing insulin.
  • Overweight or obesity- Weight also plays a vital role in type 2 diabetes. People who are overweight or obese and carry visceral fat are susceptible to type 2 diabetes. Obese people carry fat in their mid-section area, which is an early sign of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Metabolic disorder- Insulin resistance is one of the major trigger factors of type 2 diabetes. People suffering from this condition suffer from high blood pressure, fat around the waist area, high blood sugar, triglycerides, and high levels of cholesterol.
  • The liver secretes too much glucose- Normally, if the blood sugar level in your body is low, the liver secretes glucose. However, post-eating, the sugar levels rise, and the liver reverses the process and stores glucose for future use. People with type 2 diabetes have unlimited glucose secretion from the liver, which results in blood sugar levels always high.

Final words

Various factors are responsible for diabetes in people. While genetics is a major issue, lifestyle changes and food habits are also responsible. Although diabetes is not that harmful, it invites deadly diseases into your body. Therefore, it is best to get yourself examined and consult with a doctor regarding your condition. Besides, keeping a check on your food habits, daily exercise, and other lifestyle changes significantly improves your condition.
